Coaching for growth!

"I work as an interim manager. This means I undertake assignments with various companies to sort out business problems. The strapline for my business is "Restoring Confidence in Your Business Numbers".

In the second quarter of 2003, I had a particularly lean period during which assignments seemed hard to come by. I met a LeaderGen associate at a networking event. After explaining my situation she offered to do some coaching.

Over the following weeks, I either met my coach face-to-face or talked on the telephone. In the beginning, she helped me define my objectives which were, in essence, to work IN the business for four days each week and ON the business for one day a week. At the time of setting this objective, it seemed a very tall order.

Each week thereafter, we discussed what progress I had made and agreed targets for the following week. Whilst I feel I would mostly do what I undertook without any persuasion, my LeaderGen coach did provide :

• a sounding board for various ideas
• encouragement to tackle some previously untried ideas (for example, I had been putting off writing an article for a magazine and the coach gave me the impetus actually to do it)
• an audience that would encourage me to keep going when there seemed little prospect of work.

After eight weeks of coaching, I picked up a full-time assignment that lasted about ten weeks. Shortly after that, I found four different organisations that are each buying part of a week from me. By November 2003, I had achieved my objective of having (at least) four paid days' work each week.  Long may it continue!"
